“Inspired by Tolkien’s Mirkwood, the great forest of Middle Earth and home to the wood elves, Greenleaves is an effort to build something creative through community.”
—Lizabet Roberts
Greenleaves unfolded as an elven inspired evening, woven together by the threads of crowdfunding and a spirit of collaboration. Those who contributed at the highest tiers found themselves summoned to a dinner shared with beloved creators beneath the starlit skies of the Hudson Valley.
Come with me and follow the fantasy at Lizabet Robert’s Greenleaves.
“LEOGOLAS, WHAT DO YOUR ELF EYES SEE?”
Based on the iconic Aragorn quote from the movie adaptation of The Lord of The Rings, I asked revelers to describe what their “elf eyes” saw during the event.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER?
The Lord of the Rings has many legendary character, but there is truly one who stands out as a favorite…
FAVORITE QUOTES FROM LORT
In these clips, attendees share their favorite quotes from The Lord of the Rings, reflecting on the lines that resonate most with them from the epic saga.
WHAT IS YOUR LIGHT IN THE DARK?
In The Fellowship of the Ring, Galadriel presents Frodo with the Phial of Galadriel, a glowing vial filled with the light of Eärendil’s star, telling him, “May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.” The gift serves as both a symbol of hope and a reminder of the strength he will need on his perilous journey ahead.
Reflecting on the beauty of this moment, I asked attendees to describe their light in the dark.
POTATOS!
In The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Sam delivers his famous “potatoes” speech while he’s cooking over a campfire with Frodo in the wilderness of Ithilien. Frustrated by Gollum’s behavior, Sam begins to rant about how he’d cook the potatoes:
PORTRAITS & NOTES FROM THE DAY
During the day, attendees who were sleeping over in a charming cottage gathered together to spend the afternoon taking photos. After an hour of lacing up corsets, curling each other’s hair, and fixing crowns, we head into the beautiful property of Silent G Farms. Here are some of the portraits as well as musings from the adventure:
"J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings and world of Arda and Middle Earth were my first introduction to fiction and fantasy in particular. In my earliest years my father read The Hobbit to me before bed night after night (at my insistence) until we practically had the entire book memorized. Years later I moved on to The Lord of the Rings, and my illustrated copy of The Silmarillion became my comfort read in high school. Elves were always my favorite, though the older I’ve become, the more I appreciate Hobbits and the Shire. When I first saw the post for Greenleaves, I was over the moon but also terribly indecisive until I thought it was too late. I would not have been there if it wasn’t for Cel (@coppercosmonaut), and I owe them a massive debt for this wonderful experience. Dinner, wine, and music under the stars, fireflies in a nearby field like tiny lanterns in the distance, and every person I met there being absolutely wonderful, engaging, and completely kind to my awkward, anxious hermit-self, made this the most wonderful and magical night of an otherwise incredibly difficult year."

"The day was a wonderful reminder that there is so much magic in the world, and so many creative, loving people to share it with."

"I've loved the world of LOTR (Lord of the Rings) since I was in middle school, so I knew right away that Greenleaves was a project I wanted to support and participate in. The beautiful scenery, enchanting dinner party, and the warmth of all the other guests that I met made me feel like I was a part of the magical world of Middle-Earth for a day. I loved seeing everyone's beautiful and creative costumes and all the talent that went into making the party come to life."

For the evening, I made a shimmering cape with Miss Viscid Designs and paired it with a silver lame gown. A crystal crown created by Romantic Elf Jewelry had me channeling Lee Pace’s Thranduil. A pair of pointed ears from @MadHouseFXStudio studio—generously given to me by @EnchantedDreamGardens—completed the transformation.
